While it is a small business with 17 employees, it has big ambitions in the realm of sustainability: by 2030, they want to become the number one sustainable coffee partner for Belgian SMEs (small-to-medium enterprises) within their market segment.<\/p><p>One of the chosen avenues in their trajectory, is\u00a0<strong>reducing carbon emissions<\/strong>\u00a0throughout their\u00a0<strong>entire value chain<\/strong>. The crux of their challenge? Reducing the majority of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions situated within their Scope 3\u00a0<strong>purchased goods and services.\u00a0<\/strong>So, what reduction pathways have we drafted, and what concrete actions will be implemented?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-b152115 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b152115\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-2249ae4\" data-id=\"2249ae4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-cccaddf elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"cccaddf\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-0067abb\" data-id=\"0067abb\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-666a935 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"666a935\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Using CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0analysis to spot improvement areas<\/strong><\/h2><p>To develop an effective sustainability strategy for Id\u00e9 Coffee, our first step was to accurately\u00a0<strong>assess\u00a0<\/strong>the company\u2019s current\u00a0<strong>impact<\/strong>. That\u2019s why we started with a complete\u00a0<strong>CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0analysis<\/strong>, encompassing scope 1, 2 and 3.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Scope 1<\/strong>: Direct emissions from company-owned or controlled sources (like company vehicles or boilers).<\/li><li><strong>Scope 2<\/strong>: Indirect emissions from the energy the company buys (such as electricity or heat).<\/li><li><strong>Scope 3<\/strong>: Indirect emissions from other activities not owned or controlled by the company (like employee travel or waste disposal).<\/li><\/ul><p>From this analysis, it became clear that the\u00a0<strong>biggest share<\/strong>\u00a0of Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s\u00a0<strong>carbon emissions<\/strong>\u00a0currently falls under\u00a0<strong>Scope 3<\/strong>. More specifically, within the\u00a0<strong>purchased goods and services\u00a0<\/strong>category. As a result, the sustainability strategy that emerged from this analysis strongly focuses on this aspect.<\/p><h2>Developing carbon reduction pathways<\/h2><p>Based on the CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0analysis, we helped Id\u00e9 Coffee define a sustainability strategy, focussing on CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>reduction. The reduction strategy is built on two main pillars:<\/p><ul><li>A 90% reduction in CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2028.<\/li><li>A combination of reduction and compensation of Scope 3. The yearly reduction target for the purchased goods is set at 41 ton of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions. This is in line with European goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.<\/li><\/ul><p>In a first phase, the company will focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Actions include\u00a0<strong>acquiring green electricity<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>switching to electric vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0for the salesforce.<\/p><p>Next, the focus will be on reducing Scope 3 emissions. This will be achieved with a\u00a0<strong>sustainable purchase policy<\/strong>, and by\u00a0<strong>expanding the rental services with refurbished coffee machines<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Compensating remaining emissions<\/h2><p><strong>Compensation, also known as carbon offsetting, is the final step.\u00a0<\/strong>It is the practice of compensating for carbon emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove carbon from the atmosphere. This can include initiatives such as reforestation, renewable energy development, or energy efficiency improvements. Carbon compensation is\u00a0<strong>only to be used as a last resort, when a complete reduction is not possible.<\/strong><\/p><p>For this, a collaboration was established with a local partner, Resurrect. Preference will be given to compensation projects within European borders. Finally, Id\u00e9 Coffee aims to plant their own forest.<\/p><h2>A multi-faceted approach to sustainability is key<\/h2><p><strong>A comprehensive sustainability approach considers more than just carbon emissions<\/strong>. The approach that we defined together with Id\u00e9 Coffee also incorporates elements such as\u00a0<strong>social sustainability<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>biodiversity<\/strong>.<\/p><p>However, we often find that companies have trouble mastering CO<sub>2<\/sub>, understanding what it is about, and how to deal with it. Just this one aspect alone is quite complex. It requires very specific knowledge and intensive time-investment to grasp. That is why we often begin with a CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0analysis as a starting point, as we did for Id\u00e9 Coffee. But it is important to remember that it is just that: a starting point.<\/p><h2><strong>Reducing scope 3 emissions<\/strong><\/h2><p>Within the coffee machines\u2019 value chain, the\u00a0<strong>biggest contributor to CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions<\/strong>\u00a0are the\u00a0<strong>raw materials<\/strong>\u00a0used to\u00a0<strong>build the coffee machines<\/strong>. Since these machines are\u00a0<strong>purchased<\/strong>, it is not possible for Id\u00e9 Coffee to directly influence the sourcing of the raw materials. As an SME, a heavy-handed top-down approach, sometimes used by large corporations to force their suppliers to become more sustainable (or risk losing business), is not an option. So, we defined\u00a0<strong>actions within Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s circle of influence:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong>Developing and implementing a sustainable purchase policy<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Launching the SecondLife programme, introducing refurbished machines into their offering<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2>The power of a carefully curated purchase policy<\/h2><p>Part of our work for Id\u00e9 Coffee consisted of a very thorough\u00a0<strong>analysis\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>evaluation\u00a0<\/strong>of their\u00a0<strong>products\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>suppliers<\/strong>. We investigated all purchased goods and services to\u00a0<strong>assess\u00a0<\/strong>their\u00a0<strong>impact\u00a0<\/strong>in terms of\u00a0<strong>CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions<\/strong>. This allowed us to<strong>\u00a0identify opportunities for improvement<\/strong>. Items that are not very sustainable, either because of their emissions, or because they are single use, will gradually be\u00a0<strong>phased out<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>replaced\u00a0<\/strong>with alternatives, or\u00a0<strong>removed\u00a0<\/strong>altogether.<\/p><h2>The untapped potential of refurbishment<\/h2><p>One of the pillars of the\u00a0<strong>European Green Deal<\/strong>\u00a0in 2020, is a\u00a0<strong>transition to a circular economy<\/strong>, and with good reason. Let\u2019s look at the\u00a0<strong>benefits\u00a0<\/strong>of integrating\u00a0<strong>refurbishment\u00a0<\/strong>into Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s business model:<\/p><ul><li>Diminished dependence on unstable availability of raw materials<\/li><li>Refurbishing creates new job opportunities<\/li><li>Less material is needed, leading to a cost reduction<\/li><li>Reduced carbon footprint because of lower CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions<\/li><li>Less waste<\/li><li>Added value for customers in search of sustainable purchase options of their own<\/li><\/ul><h2>Finetuning a circular business model<\/h2><p>Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s existing Product-as-a-Service model, where they offer customers the option to rent coffee machines rather than purchase them, including maintenance and repair, is already circular in nature. But now, they have managed to make this part of their business even more sustainable by offering the choice between new and refurbished machines for rent. Refurbished machines have a\u00a0<strong>lower impact<\/strong>\u00a0than new machines.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<strong>job opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0and other benefits that come with refurbishment are kept within the company by organising the\u00a0<strong>refurbishing in-house<\/strong>. Plus, by doing this locally, carbon footprint is reduced even further. This also allows a direct control and exact insight into the CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>emissions that are inevitable and will be compensated.<\/p><p>By introducing the SecondLife programme, Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s customers now have the option of making an even more sustainable choice and reducing their impact. When operating in a\u00a0<strong>B2B\u00a0<\/strong>environment, this is a\u00a0<strong>smart business move<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>The competitive advantage of sustainability in a B2B market<\/h2><p><strong>New sustainability regulations and an increased market awareness are causing the corporate sustainability landscape to evolve quickly<\/strong>. Organisations big and small need to adapt to this new reality, by evaluating the level of sustainability within their organisation, acting where needed, and creating transparency about the process in their reporting.<\/p><p><strong>The SecondLife programme smartly capitalises on this trend.<\/strong>\u00a0The shift towards more sustainability is often discussed in terms of challenges, but there\u2019s a strong argument to be made for the opportunities it presents as well, as demonstrated here.<\/p><p><strong>How?<\/strong>\u00a0Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s B2B customer database is unavoidably affected by the changing corporate sustainability landscape and will need to take sustainable action. By offering a viable and easy sustainable alternative, backed with the necessary data and transparent reporting, the coffee supplier is\u00a0<strong>making their customers\u2019 lives easier<\/strong>, and increasing their own chances of success. There are multiple benefits to this approach:<\/p><ul><li>Standing out from the competition<\/li><li>Future-proof business<\/li><li>Positive impact on the environment<\/li><\/ul><h2>What\u2019s next for Id\u00e9 Coffee?<\/h2><p>Conducting an analysis to evaluate Id\u00e9 Coffee\u2019s current impact, and developing a sustainable improvement strategy, were the building blocks to bring the existing sustainability strategy to a new, more in depth level.<\/p><p>To truly incorporate sustainability even more into the heart of the organisation, and to create effective, lasting change, a long-term commitment to sustainability is crucial.\u00a0<strong>Repetition is a key word here:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong>A yearly reiteration of the first baseline CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0analysis<\/strong>\u00a0is necessary to track progress of the reduction strategy<\/li><li><strong>Continuous transparent communication<\/strong>\u00a0on the progress that is made<\/li><\/ul><p>Additionally, the company has pledged to take on a leading role in the corporate sustainability transformation. Not just by setting an example, but by\u00a0<strong>investing in education and awareness,\u00a0<\/strong>both for local companies within their direct environment as for others in the coffee industry.
