Leading by example:
our own sustainability approach

An exciting journey of continuous improvement and limitless innovation

Since The Ecological Entrepreneur was founded, we have been driven by a holistic vision of sustainability. It’s our mission to harmonise economy with ecology and society. We want to create a positive impact on all three levels, and help others to do the same, so we can safeguard our current quality of life and ensure a fair and fulfilling life for everyone – today and in the future.

We practice what we preach, and we lead by example. That’s why we decided to publish a yearly sustainability report, to reflect on our past efforts, track our progress, and cast our eye towards the future. Our goal is to create transparency and inspire action – within our own organisation, amongst stakeholders, and clients.

“Our ambition is to be the best in class. We’ve accomplished a great deal, but we recognise that we’re still on a journey. Perfection isn’t our aim – continuous improvement is. We embrace being 90% there, as it leaves room for growth, innovation, and adaptation. We know that the path to sustainability is ever evolving, and we’re committed to evolving with it.”

– Sebastiaan  & Marit – founders of The Ecological Entrepreneur

What we aim for

Our sustainability strategy consists of long- and short-term goals. The roadmap we developed to reach those goals is extensive and highly detailed, and more importantly, subject to change if need be. However, we have defined a few overarching goals and priorities we are determined to achieve no matter what.

By 2025, our goal is to reach climate neutrality, and by 2030, to become carbon negative.

Inclusivity, employee well-being, and ethical supplier and customer relations are non-negotiable

We will implement policies that align with our commitment to ethical business practices and transparency

Our golden rules

Our sustainability strategy is firmly rooted in a few guiding principles and values that shape our approach:

1. We strive for continuous improvement:

We see sustainability as a journey of growth, not a pursuit of perfection. Being “almost there” excites us. It opens doors for innovation and adaptability in a field that’s always evolving. We’re committed to evolving with it.

2. We always put our trust in a science-based approach:

Data is an essential element of our strategy. We work fact-based and consult reliable resources. We advocate for transparency and take a firm stance against greenwashing practices and cover-ups.

3. We remain agile:

To adapt to the dynamic nature of the challenges we face, we remain flexible in our approach, and adapt where necessary. We will repeat our yearly impact assessment and establish regular check-ins to evaluate our progress.

4. We adopt a holistic approach to sustainability:

True sustainability for us is not limited to addressing environmental challenges. On top of environmental stewardship, it should also include social equity and robust governance.

5. We believe in a democratic strategy:

We don’t subscribe to a top-down approach to sustainability. We value our employees’ feedback and actively seek it through internal surveys and brainstorming sessions. Everybody gets to have a say. To ensure we stay on track with our goals, we have created an in-house sustainability team, consisting of sustainability consultants and management members.

Our 2023 Sustainability Report

In 2024, we launched our first annual sustainability report, looking back on 2023 and establishing a roadmap, driving our goals, actions, and results toward tangible change. This roadmap is a dynamic document, regularly reviewed and updated to integrate new insights, address emerging challenges, and capitalise on opportunities.
